About the artist

Howard Schatz (American, b. 1940), is originally trained as a retina specialist at John Hopkins University. Howard Schatz worked as an ophthalmologist before turning to a photography career in the 1990s. Schatz’s background studying human anatomy and biology plays into his practice. Whether working in film or digital composites, Schatz focuses on the specificities of the human form and the details of light and color. His technically masterful images challenge traditional representations of the body. Schatz has received numerous awards for his work, including the National Press Photographers Association Award in 2011.
