Élan Symphonique: Body Architecture in Two Voices
Élan Symphonique: Body Architecture in Two Voices
Élan Symphonique sits at the centre of the Frames of Motion – Élan series, a group of square compositions where movement is treated as architecture rather than illustration. Photographed by Chris Nash and curated by Dance Artworks Gallery, the work balances two dancers in a single structural gesture – a cross of limbs that reads less as a pose and more as a temporary building in space.
Seen on its own, the piece is a study in counterbalance: one dancer stabilises the base, the other extends upward, their lines opening along a diagonal that runs cleanly across the square. The negative space around them is generous, almost clinical, keeping attention on the alignment of torso, leg and arms. It is a figure study, but also a diagram of shared weight.
Elan as a design principle
The Élan sub-series within Frames of Motion takes its name from the French word for momentum and artistic impulse. Across Élan Structuré, Élan Ascendant, Élan Vivant and Élan Symphonique, the body is consistently treated as a sculptural element: pared-back, high-contrast, held at the threshold between control and release.
In Élan Symphonique, the duet is almost orchestral. One dancer carries the horizontal line; the other resolves vertically. The result is a quiet “X” that anchors the image. For collectors and designers, this makes the print unusually versatile – the structure is strong enough to sit on a largely empty wall without additional works, yet subtle enough to support groupings within a larger hanging plan.
How the work behaves in space

Installed above a bench in a hallway, the square format brings order to circulation spaces that are often visually overlooked. In a studio or home office, the duet introduces disciplined movement without agitation. In bedrooms and reading corners, the work functions as a point of focus rather than spectacle – a composed stillness more than a performance.
The monochrome palette plays well with both warm and cool interiors. Timber panelling, stone floors, concrete, muted textiles and monochrome tile all register as neutral grounds for the image. The dancers’ bodies become a central layer of tone and rhythm, not an attention-grabbing colour accent.
Placement notes for interiors
- Scale: The square proportions suit single-column walls, between-door spaces and headboard widths where height is limited but a clear focal point is required.
- Palette: Works particularly well with soft whites, warm greys, light timber and matte black details such as fixtures, frames and chairs.
- Rooms: Hallways, studio workspaces, bedroom walls above low furniture, reception lounges and treatment rooms where calm, structured imagery is needed.

Production & collecting notes
Élan Symphonique is produced as an archival giclée fine art print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm, a museum-grade, 100% cotton paper known for its velvety surface and stable blacks. Each print is made to order using ultra high-resolution pigment inks and ships with a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Dance Artworks Gallery, confirming the work’s provenance within the Getty Images dance archive and its curatorial selection.
The print is available as a print-only option with a gallery border, or as a framed print in a premium black frame with white mount and plexiglass glazing. All editions are produced through carbon-neutral printing and plastic-free packaging, with worldwide tracked delivery. For specific timelines and tax information, please refer to the product page.
Working with Élan Symphonique in a project
For interior designers and B2B projects, Élan Symphonique can act either as a solo focal point or as part of a mini-collection. Combining it with other Élan works creates a continuous language of square black-and-white figure studies, each exploring a slightly different relationship between body and space.
If you are specifying the work for a multi-room project or need coordinated framing across several pieces, we recommend contacting the gallery early in the process. A tailored spec pack can align sizing, placement and budget while keeping the series’ sculptural integrity intact.
