Henri Matisse

French · 1869–1954 · Fauvism

Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954) was a leading figure of Fauvism and one of the most influential artists of the modern era. Working across painting, sculpture, and works on paper, Matisse experimented with vivid colour, reduced flat shapes, and Pointillist technique. His subjects of choice included nudes, dancers, still life, and interior scenes. Dance was a recurring motif throughout his career — from the monumental La Danse (1910) to the late cut-outs in which figures are reduced to pure colour and form.

What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter. — Henri Matisse
